Drag Counter Protest

A Drag story time event on the 2nd of August in North Walsham was recently postponed due to safety concerns of the attendees as the “Patriotic Alternative” made an appearance to protest a centuries old art for our country. A following story time in Cromer was also postponed, and the artist Titania Trust has expressed dismay at the sudden backlash which was perpetuated by 15 outsiders to the Anglia region, and thrilled by the amount of support they’ve received by locals and local groups and organizations.

One of the Protestors, Chris Mitchel from Caistor, has been quoted in the EDP as saying “It’s not acceptable to be teaching our children.” Mitchel has admitted to not having any children himself.

One must acknowledge in these situations that the scaremongering of trans people, previously not seen as a problem or threat for the last several decades, has started having a ripple effect on other minorities and communities. “Men in dresses” has become such a drilled narrative that public safety has entered extreme jeopardy. Drag has been an accepted and lauded craft over the last ten years due to popular TV shows and the ongoing education of human rights, and the upset over it has effected a tiny proportion of the population rabidly, to the extent they must travel across the country in tiny groups to behave aggressively and homophobically.

The next event is scheduled for the 17th of August outside the Forum Millennial Library at 1.30pm, both protestors and counter protestors have begun mobilizing ready for the event.

In times like this we must remember the age old mantra: “If one of us has no rights, none of us do.”
